Piano and Orchestra Workshop

Also available in: Italiano

Pianisti amatori e appassionati: è la vostra occasione!

After the great success of the fifth edition of the “Milano Amateurs & Orchestra Festival” which attracted the attention and curiosity of local and national radio and TV such as Radio 3 RAI and Rai 3 and newspapers such as the Amadeus and Corriere della Sera, PianoLink relaunches with the sixth edition of the workshops of piano and orchestra and singing and orchestra open to pianists and singers, amateurs and self-taught Italian and foreigners also without any title of music study.

Admission is subject to passing an audition and courses will begin in September 2020. During the selection hearings that started in July 2020 and that continue after the summer, candidates for pianists and non-professional singers are invited to run a free program lasting about 5-10 minutes. PianoLink is selecting the 10 participants who will finally be able to live the experience of playing or singing with a large symphony orchestra. Already 7 selected participants confirmed: Milanese professionals including surgeons, lawyers, clerks, professors … who experience music as a great passion and resource for individual enrichment.

PianoLink relaunches its idea, betting on the passion of amateur musicians and on the commitment with which they every day obtain a space for their instrument and their music from the whirlwind of professional and daily life. The workshop, which will start in September 2020 and will take place in the PianoLink headquarters in Via Bergognone in Milan, is divided into progressive lessons with lots of rehearsals with orchestra in different formations and a day of masterclass of improvement with a great guest musician from international fame. The admitted participants will play on the occasion of the gala concert of the MiAmOr Music Festival 2021 at the Palazzina Liberty in Milan.

Several options for membership (symphony, chamber) and frequency (full, intensive, light) to meet the needs of even the most saturated agendas … flexible hours, day and evening and the possibility of lessons both midweek and weekends, to accompany the participants step by step in learning a piece with orchestra from the first notes until the final performance in June 2021, in the prestigious stage of the Palazzina Liberty: a program to be envied by conservatories all over Italy.

PianoLink peeps into the Milanese music scene to make even the high musical education accessible to every student or aspiring musician, to open the stages to the passionate music of professionals such as amateurs or self-taught people of all ages.

“We have conceived a musical nursery of new connections. This place exists and is a possible place. Connections are real bonds. These too exist. And they are called links! “. These are the words of the PianoLink President Andrea Vizzini, a musician who promises to bring everyone’s music on the stage, reverse roles, shuffle the cards, for a truly Allegro con brio result …

The Workshops for amateur musicians with Orchestra are an initiative conceived and produced by PianoLink, in collaboration with the Municipality of Milan Entertainment Area and Lombardy Region.

The workshop is aimed at non-professional pianists who have already acquired a level of skill on the instrument corresponding to at least the third / fourth year of the pre-academic piano courses in Italian conservatories. Admission, open to all Italian and foreign amateur pianists, does not require any musical study qualification and is subject to passing an audition that attests to the required level. The candidate who passes the selection will be assigned a master tutor who will hold individual lessons for the duration of the workshop.

The course is structured to accompany the participant, step by step in all stages of learning, to acquire the musical and technical knowledge necessary to perform a piece for piano and orchestra, in a didactic process consisting of 10 to 17 lessons, starting from from reading the score to perfecting the performance, with a progressive and gradually more in-depth study, aimed at presenting and addressing all the issues related to ensemble music up to the interaction with the conductor and with a large symphony orchestra .

During the course, once the first reading of the score has been passed, the path of preparation for the ensemble, interpretation of the movements and notes of the conductor starts, thanks to lessons with the conductor and with the orchestra in reduced training. . Between an overall lesson and the next, there are always study and in-depth lessons with the tutor pianists to solve and define the aspects addressed with the conductor. In the final phase of the course, the student participates in a masterclass held by a great internationally renowned pianist, to learn more about the most refined musical, stylistic and interpretative aspects. Then a lesson and general rehearsal with the orchestra in full formation. Here is the program in full frequency mode (solutions with a different number of lessons are also possible; all the details in the following sections of this sheet).

Repertoire

Play a song on your strings

After the selection auditions, the Artistic Direction proposes a list of pieces for piano and orchestra in line with the level demonstrated by each admitted participant. The pieces are mainly taken from piano literature with orchestra (concerts for piano and orchestra by Mozart, Bach, Haydn, Beethoven etc ….) or arrangements for piano and orchestra of great themes drawn from diversified musical genres.

Each participant will be guided in the most appropriate choice of the piece, based on his skills as well as the expressive attitudes shown during the selection auditions.

Didactic path

All the steps to your stage

The workshop is divided into 17 progressive meetings (full frequency option) aimed at accompanying the participant throughout the learning process, phase after phase, of the chosen piece. In this way, every technical and musical difficulty is addressed together with the teachers and resolved in the ways and times necessary for a result of high artistic value. The lessons with the tutors last about 75 ‘. Here is the lesson program in detail:

lessons 1-6: individual, on 2 pianos with pianist tutor (1 for solo part, 1 for orchestral part). During these lessons the first structural analysis of the piece is dealt with, the reading of the score, a first summary performance, with joined hands and reduced speed, and then progressively adapting it to the author’s metronomic indications, until obtaining a formally correct and already together performance the orchestral part, played in a reduced version by the maestro on the second piano.
lesson 7 “comparison”: individual lesson held by the second tutor of the workshop on 2 pianos and in the presence of all participants. A lesson entirely dedicated to the comparison between performances, interpretations and aimed at knowing the different point of view of the second tutor of the workshop.
lesson 8: group lesson, with conductor and small orchestra (50 ‘). The lesson, carried out with the further presence of the tutor, consists of a first group rehearsal in which the participant interacts for the first time with the orchestra and conductor. The lesson is aimed at introducing the participants to the difficulties associated with performing together, getting to know the director’s notes and getting familiar with them.
lessons 9-10: individual, on 2 pianos with pianist tutor. These lessons aim to unravel the doubts that arose during the first rehearsal with the orchestra and to resolve the technical and musical difficulties that have arisen, as well as to address and perfect all the interpretative and stylistic musical aspects.
lesson 11: group lesson, with conductor and reduced orchestra (50 ‘). This second rehearsal with the orchestra in reduced formation allows the participant to implement all the musical and technical precautions acquired during the lessons already held.
lesson 12 “comparison”: individual lesson held by the second tutor of the workshop on 2 pianos and in the presence of all participants. A lesson entirely dedicated to the comparison between performances, interpretations and aimed at hearing the point of view of the second tutor of the workshop. A further comparison work, addressed together with both tutors, aimed at defining the goals achieved and solving any further problems that arose during the last rehearsal with the orchestra. At this point, the participant enters the final stage of the workshop: that of improvement. The execution is almost ready. Another month for the final execution in public
lesson 13: masterclass with internationally renowned pianist. During this lesson, the participant plays in front of a great interpreter of the international music scene. from which he can obtain valuable opinions and advice of the highest artistic and musical value. It is a rare and important occasion to talk with a great musician, for the occasion dedicated exclusively to him and his music.
lesson 14: individual lesson, on 2 pianos with pianist tutor. An intermediate lesson with the tutor allows you to tackle and solve what has just been acquired during the masterclass and focus the techniques to achieve individual stylistic and artistic choices.
lesson 15: ensemble lesson with conductor and rehearsal with full symphony orchestra (50). A lesson with the complete symphony orchestra, dedicated to the performance of the ensemble with all the orchestrals (number according to the scores and indications of the authors). This lesson, followed by a general rehearsal of the final concert, brings the participant to the complete vision of the result achieved, obtained thanks to a long and gradual learning process.
lesson 16: individual, on 2 pianos with tutor. A further lesson dedicated to solving any further difficulties, aimed at consolidating and refining the most refined musical aspects. The finishing touches …

GALA CONCERT “MiAmOr Music Festival 2021”. A piano. A soloist. A symphony orchestra. An orchestra conductor. Audience in turmoil.
The dream comes true.

Options and attendance fees

The selection auditions are intended to determine the level of each candidate, and to guide them in choosing a song in a coherent and appropriate way, to achieve an excellent musical result. The candidate has the opportunity to choose, at the time of registration, the preferred type of membership. Furthermore, the structure of the workshop is designed to distribute the learning, development, consolidation and improvement process of the concepts and musical and technical aspects to which it is aimed, over a wide period of time, and for this purpose we have chosen to preferably insert a period of at least 2 weeks between one lesson and the next, to allow the participant to face the independent study on the instrument serenely and with the right time. However, we have provided different ways of joining and attending, to meet the needs of all our members!

SYMPHONY grade and CHAMBER grade

Symphony grade is full membership in all modules of the workshop. It includes all the lessons with the tutors, the masterclass, the lessons with the conductor and with the orchestra in all formations, reduced and complete. It foresees and is aimed at the public concert with the symphony orchestra.

Participation in the course does not imply an obligation to participate in the final concert, however optional for all participants. However, in order to join the Symphony grade, a level of mastery of the instrument is required such as to allow a performance with the symphony orchestra in full formation and the possible participation in the final concert in public. The candidate is not required to independently determine his / her level, since the selection hearings are aimed at this assessment. If the candidate is not, in the opinion of the Artistic Director, suitable for admission to the Symphony grade, he will have the opportunity to enter as a Chamber grade participant.

The Chamber grade consists in the complete adhesion to all the lessons with the tutors, master classes, lessons with the conductor and with the orchestra in the only reduced formation. Therefore, only lessons with the orchestra in full formation and the final public concert will be excluded.

The candidate has the opportunity to opt for “chamber level” membership also spontaneously, if he prefers to follow the course from the beginning but not participate in the final concert.

FULL, LIGHT, SMART frequency.

  • The FULL frequency option is the most complete option. It consists in participating in the standard workshop calendar, distributed over 17 meetings, with a biweekly frequency of lessons (the candidate who decides to participate in the workshop but who wants for any reason to concentrate the lessons in a limited time frame, can request the intensive option) and an intensification in the final phase. The lessons will begin in September 2020 and will end in June 2021. Applications for enrollment in the auditions sent after the start of the courses will be submitted to the evaluation of the artistic direction.
  • The LIGHT frequency option consists in the possibility of following a lower number of lessons (both for Symphony grade and Chamber grade) throughout the year. It is an option reserved for those who have already acquired a high command of vocality or prefer to attend fewer lessons.
  • The SMART frequency option, aimed at those who have already prepared or are independently preparing a repertoire for piano and orchestra, includes the overall phases of the light option preceded by a preliminary lesson with the tutor on 2 pianos. The acceptance of the registration with smart frequency mode is subject to evaluation and approval by the Artistic Direction.

Candidates are required to participate in the selection hearings starting from July 2020 or on request during the academic year, subject to availability of places. The possibility of joining with an intensive option is subject to practical and organizational needs. If the workshop runs out of available places, further applications will not be accepted during the year.

A number of participants ranging from a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 7 per academic year will be admitted to the Workshops. It follows that registrations after the seventh (in chronological order of receipt of the online registration form) will be accepted with reserve. The reserve will be dissolved upon reaching a total number of members equal to or greater than 10.

The piano and orchestra workshop is open to members of the PianoLink Association. Joining PianoLink is very simple and you can request it by simply clicking here!

All hearings are free. For all members! For all Workshops!

Participation in the workshop requires an enrollment fee and a variable number of periodic attendance fees. Candidates who pass the selection auditions, both for admission to the Symphony grade and to the Chamber grade, and in all full, light and smart attendance modes are required to pay the workshop registration fee of € 360.00 and attendance fees based on the type of registration. Below is a synoptic table of the contents and costs relating to the two Symphony grade and Chamber grade options, in the 3 full, light and smart frequency modes.
